The whole world was looking to Paris these days, to follow the records of the more than 10,000 athletes participating in the 2024 Olympic Games. At the same time, the planet is breaking other records that are not so positive: high temperatures, droughts, floods… Ayuda en Acción wanted to take advantage of this moment to raise awareness of the effects of the climate crisis on people and the planet through its campaign Records that break people.
Campaign on climate records
“Some people break records, but some records break people”. This is the slogan of Ayuda en Acción´s campaign to raise awareness this summer about how climate crisis records are hitting people in vulnerable situations the hardest.
“The climate crisis is certainly one of the greatest challenges of our time. It causes massive flows of displaced people, aggravates the food crisis, affects economic opportunities and increases poverty, ultimately endangering the lives of millions of vulnerable people to whom we support”, says Jorge Cattaneo, Deputy Director of Ayuda en Acción.
The sports world at the heart of the campaign
This campaign, which will run until September, involves Spanish sportsmen and sportswomen of all times. Spain’s most decorated athlete, canoeist Saúl Craviotto, captains a team of ambassadors that also counts with Gemma Mengual (synchronised swimming), Chema Martínez (athletics), Amaya Valdemoro (basketball), Fernando Romay (basketball) and Lydia Valentín (weightlifting).
The records of a planet on red alert
For more than 40 years, Ayuda en Acción has witnessed climate records that affect realities such as forced human mobility, food security and poverty, among others. Some of these records are:
- The last nine years have been the warmest on the planet since records have been kept.
- On 22nd July, the world broke its temperature record.
- Climate change is displacing more and more people from their homes. In 2023, catastrophes such as Cyclone Freddy in Africa, the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey and Cyclone Mocha in the Indian Ocean caused 26.4 million displacements. This is equivalent to 56% of all new internal displacement.
